Greening & Cleaning Committee

EKNA CLEANUPS

The EKNA Cleaning & Greening Committee hosts regular neighborhood cleanups and can help you plan and facilitate cleanups on your block! Keep an eye on the EKNA Calendar and Facebook pages for upcoming cleanups. Want to host a cleanup on your block or want to suggest a location that needs some attention? Email info@ekna.org.

The Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC) has been organizing block captains since 1956. With over 6,500 block captains in the city, they are the people keeping our blocks clean and green. But we always need more, especially in East Kensington. Go to cleanphl.org and search your address to find out your block's litter score and find your block captain.  Please check this link to see if your block does not have a block captain. If your block does not have a block captain and you'd like to become one, please visit the PMBC Block Captain page to sign up today."

Together, we can keep our community clean! If you're already a block captain, download this flyer to let your neighbors know who you are and when cleanups will happen.

EKNA and ORCA are also happy to maintain a tool library for block cleanups in the EKNA and ORCA service areas. This service is only available to EKNA/ORCA members that can prove residency and are only available Saturday 10am-2pm. Submit your tool requests today!

Our next cleanup will be Saturday, November 10.

Please join volunteers from NKCDC and EKNA for our Fall Clean Up. EKNA is organizing clean ups at 2600 Braddock St., Letterly Green Park at Letterly and Amber St. and Pop's Playground at Hazzard St. and Trenton Ave. All volunteer opportunities are from 10 AM to 12 PM with a BBQ to follow at PBC. Thanks for helping keep the neighborhood clean!

East Kensington Green Spaces

Arcadia Commons – Arcadia Commons was founded in the summer of 2013 by residents of East Kensington whose collective expertise in visual arts, design, architecture, arts education, community organizing, urban planning, sustainable building, and real estate provides Arcadia Commons the ingredients for success. We see our non-profit as the anchor organization that serves the community by providing affordable resources which will revitalize local business and industry and build a healthy local economy. To do this, Arcadia Commons intends to become a new model for partnership success between the City, a neighborhood group, and philanthropy to transform blighted vacant lots into urban agriculture and open space utilizing Philadelphia’s new Land Bank legislation. Map

Emerald Park – The Jewel of East Kensington, Emerald Park began with caring residents and a blight fighting initiative of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS). In 1996, PHS cleared the land where nine houses were previously burned or condemned and transformed the space with neighbors planting shrubs, fruiting trees, grass, installing benches, tables, and a Mural through Mural Arts. Map

Emerald Street Community Farm – Emerald St Community Farm is a communal farming project started by a group of neighbors in the the Spring of 2008. The Farm is open every Monday, May – October 5-8PM. All are welcome! We grow communally and share in the harvest. We also have weekly kids activities: Cooking Classes, Kids Gardening and Craftivity Hour! Come on by to get your hands dirty, hang out and take home some delicious organic veggies! We are located on the Corner of Emerald St and Dauphin St in Philadelphia PA.

Frankford Avenue Garden – Since 2004, the Frankford Ave Garden has been a beautiful place to gather and learn for the residents of Kensington. There are no gates or fences, and ALL are welcome to come and enjoy the space from Dawn until Dusk any day, any season. The Garden sits on vacant Public Land and is maintained by The Friends of the Frankford Avenue Garden. We have regular work times (Sunday Morning and Tuesday Evening in season) which also serve as Group meetings. Map
